Modeshift Stars and Chew Stoke Church School

Chew Stoke Church School is proud to be working with Modeshift Stars and since 2018 has been busy working towards their accreditations, despite a global pandemic soon after starting their journey. We have been awarded an outstanding accreditation for the last five years, which clearly demonstrates the school’s commitment to promoting safe and active sustainable travel to and from school. We recognise and teach the importance of safe and active sustainable travel on both our physical and mental health and the effect it can have on the environment.

The Modeshift Vision

Modeshift aims to secure increased levels of safe, active and sustainable travel in business, education and community settings. They do this by representing their members needs and supporting sustainable travel practitioners through a range of new and existing services.

Modeshift works with its members and partners in striving towards a world in which communities are free to make healthy and sustainable travel choices where active travel is seen as the norm.

What is Modeshift Stars?

Modeshift STARS is the Centre of Excellence for the delivery of Effective Travel Plans in Education, Business and Community settings. The scheme recognises schools, businesses and other organisations that have shown excellence in supporting cycling, walking and other forms of sustainable and active travel.

Launched in 2008, the STARS Education scheme is supported by the Department for Transport and has seen over 1,400 schools in England achieve accreditation since its inception. In the Autumn and Spring of each year, schools, local authorities and key partners come together for the National STARS School Travel Awards which recognise the outstanding schools from each local authority.

Modeshift Stars Schemes Modeshift STARS is the national schools awards scheme that has been established to recognise schools that have demonstrated excellence in supporting cycling, walking and other forms of sustainable travel. The scheme encourages schools across the country to join in a major effort to increase levels of sustainable and active travel in order to improve the health and well-being of children and young people. Every school in England (outside of London) can participate in Modeshift STARS for free.

Modeshift STARS offers National Accreditation for sites that have demonstrated best practice in the implementation of their Travel Plan. Sites are awarded Approved, Good, Very Good, Excellent and Outstanding accreditation. Very good, Excellent and Outstanding recognise sites that achieve a reduction in single-occupancy car journeys to/from their site and Platinum recognises sites that achieved an increase in active travel modes.

Initiatives at Chew Stoke Church School

Our elected PE Council members alongside Miss Hennessy our PE Subject Leader work hard throughout the year to ensure a wide range of creative, exciting and engaging initiatives are planned and delivered throughout the whole school, promoting green modes of transport such as walking, scooting and cycling when travelling to and from school. They organise and lead assemblies, hold intra-school competitions, plan and steward walk to school days, host 'Bike Breakfasts', record videos and write emails to our school community explaining our work and vision and support staff when taking part in special events. E.g. Clean Air Day, Road Safety Week or Earth Day.

What Modeshift Stars said about Chew Stoke Church School

Chew Stoke Church School have been striving to promote cycling and scooting across the whole school. With the help of the PE Council, their mission has been to educate the children and families of the school about the benefits of travelling to and from school in this way. They have highlighted the benefits to their health and wellbeing and how we can be doing our bit to help save the planet. Their PE Council have also led their own project to increase the number of children cycling and scooting to school and as a result, more than tripled the number of children actively travelling to school in both EYFS/ KS1 and KS2. It has been a whole school effort to improve the number of children taking part in active travel to and from school and they are very proud of their results. We are especially proud of all the work which has taken place since starting the programme 8 years ago.
